Texas was the only major producing state to add drilling rigs last week, according to the weekly report of Sept. 5 from Baker Hughes. Texas added 2 rigs to reach 243, but its count is down 31 or 11 percent from 274 a year ago. It was the state’s second straight week of gains following 15 weeks of declining or flat rig count since May 9.
Also as of Sept. 5, there were 254 rigs in Permian Basin (down 1 in the past week, down 52 or 17 percent from 306 a year ago), 93 in New Mexico (down 2 in past week, down 13 in past year) and 537 in U.S. (up 1 in past week, down 45 or 8 percent from 582 a year ago). Permian last added a rig Feb. 28 so it’s had 27 weeks of declining or flat count.
Only 7 counties in Permian have double digit rig counts. Lea (down 2 to 49) and Eddy (up 1 to 37) in New Mexico remain the leaders ahead of Loving with 23 (up 1), Reeves with 21 (up 1), Midland with 20 (down 1), Martin with 17 and Reagan with 11 (down 1).
Oklahoma remains No. 3 among states with 43 rigs followed by Louisiana with 37 and North Dakota with 27 – all unchanged in past week. Eagle Ford in south Texas and Haynesville remain equal among regions with 39 rigs each followed by Williston with 29 and Marcellus with 24 – all unchanged for the past week.
